Pets for Vets

Many of our own Board Members and Volunteers have served or have family that are serving in our nations military. We believe our country owes our military a debt of gratitude. Our soldiers are brave but many of them have returned with physical and emotional injuries that have made it difficult to transition back to civilian life. Some estimates state that as many as 25% of returning military veterans suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Our goal is to help to try to heal the emotional wounds of military personnel by pairing them with a rescue animal that is specially selected to match his or her personality.  Needy rescue animals receive a second chance at life while giving our returning soldiers a second chance at health and happiness. The bonds of friendship formed between man and animal have the power to ease the suffering of our troops when they return from overseas.

Approx.  4 million dogs and cats are euthanized each year many of these animals would make excellent companion animals but they are never given chance. Sadly, there are alarming statistics of suicide, family abuse and P.T.S.D. facing our military personnel returning to civilian life after military duty. This can cause a downward spiral of apathy, unemployment, broken relationships, addiction and depression.

It is our belief that companion animals can be the life saving therapy or friend that many returning service men and women need.  We interview each prospective adopter to ascertain what he or she is looking for in a companion animal, to ensure we make the perfect vet-pet match. Once the perfect pet is selected for the veteran, we do our best to provide everything we can to help ensure the vet and pet get off to a great start. One of those is providing ½ price adoptions to any past or current military personnel (with proper identification). The animal is sterilized, micro chipped, flea treated and dewormed. In most cases has all the vaccinations for a year including Rabies, canines are Heart-worm tested and given preventative and Felines are tested for FIV/FeLV.
